Book Review: The Backup Fiance by Nikki Duncan

Everyone out there that thinks Twitter is for Tweeps, well, you’re right – but Tweeps are cool! They pass along information – like new releases. This title came via such a ‘re-tweeted’ release announcement. I’d never have seen it or even known if I hadn’t had Twitter.

I’ve never been so happy to be a Tweep!

The Back-Up Fiance’ was a wonderful (but short!) read.  Nikki Duncan’s ability to dig inside her character’s brain and show us exactly what they’re feeling and thinking – all the raw emotion there – is outstanding.

From the first words of the book, we meet a man (Neil) desperate to do whatever it takes, including marrying someone he doesn’t completely love, to keep his godson (Will) after the tragic accident that claimed his best friends’ lives (Will’s parents).  More than just getting him out of the foster home, he’d made a promise to his best friend the day the little boy was born and he intended to keep it – no matter what.

The leading female role is a strong, sassy character (Delaney) who gives as good as she gets.  She’s the perfect match for Neil in every way.  She’s also his best friend.  While she’s had him in her sights for years, she’s never been a blip on his radar.  At least not until his fiance backs out and Delaney backs him into a proverbial corner.

This was a hugely heart-warming story in a tiny package.  I would’ve liked it to be longer.  Would’ve liked to see what happened next and how they dealt with it (I can’t say or it’ll ruin the ending – and I *hate* ruining the endings of things!)  Ms. Duncan balances out the feel-good, warmth of genuine love with a few hot and spicy scenes that will have you reaching for a cold drink and a fan!

All in all, I have to say this was a perfect, quick, light read that did exactly what I suspect Ms. Duncan wanted – it drew me in and entertained me.  I actually sat down to read it and never left my chair until I was done.

Even though Ms. Duncan left me wanting and wishing for an epilogue or a sequel (*hint hint hint!*) I enjoyed this tale so much that I will not hesitate to go out and procure other titles by this wonderful author.

So, for a wonderfully charming tale that will lift your day (and add a little spice here and there!), I’m awarding Ms. Duncan…

Four gold stars!
